Sequatchie County

About Sequatchie County

The entire area known as the Sequatchie Valley, which extends into other counties, has the well-deserved reputation as one of the most beautiful parts in Tennessee. A remarkable 125-mile long valley in the Cumberland Plateau, the valley includes picturesque farms, forests, mountains and the Sequatchie River. This is the perfect place for a country drive or a bike ride in the countryside.

The air is sweet and the antique stores, roadside produce stands and restaurants featuring down-home cooking add to the charm of this pastoral setting. Historically, Sequatchie County was developed in the late 1800's as a coal mining area, with mines on
Fredonia Mountain above Dunlap, the county seat. In the mining heydays, an incline railway lowered thousands of tons of coal to coke ovens in the valley below, where it was converted into industrial coke and transported to the iron foundries of Chattanooga.

You can see the remains of the original beehive coke ovens in
Coke Oven Park in Dunlap. The annual Coke Oven Bluegrass Festival and Craft Show is held each June. Opportunities abound for nature lovers in Sequatchie County. Dunlap is known as the hang gliding capital of the eastern United States, and colorful gliders are frequently seen soaring above. Take a pack trip on llamas, or canoe the gentle Sequatchie River as it flows southwards under a canopy of hardwoods and passes by lush farms. Don't forget your fishing pole!
