The traditional music of the Southeast Tennessee region began with country dances and fiddle contests. It found its way onto every kind of reproduction and transmission media -- from wax cylinders and music boxes to radio and digital media. It has evolved into live performance at music festivals, community oprys, and regular open 'jam' sessions. Traditional music is played and enjoyed in the region in a wide variety of venues--places suitable for local ensemble and solo performance--as polished stage performance, 'practice in front of an audience,' and casual but intense interaction in more musician-oriented settings.
The Blues To Bluegrass Trail describes the annual, monthly, weekly and other live music events in southeast Tennessee. Please visit the venues to hear the musical heritage of southeast Tennessee and experience an important part of the people's lives who live here.
The professional musician is often heard to say "We couldn't do this without our fans." For the traditional musician, who may spend more on his or her instrument than he or she makes from performance for several years running, that statement could be rewritten: "We couldn't do this without the place to gather together, without the opportunity to learn from and teach each other, and without the audience who responds to what we do."
Local traditional music venues have already proven to be the grade schools and grad schools for some of the world's finest musicians. These venues --informal institutions of higher learning-- and the audiences that keep them going, support our local musicians and deserve our appreciation, recognition, and support.
