The Church of The Holy Comforter traces its roots to the formation of Fairmount College in what is now Monteagle, but which was then known as “Moffat’s Station.” Fairmount was situated on 50 acres that was given in 1870 by the Scottish-born preacher John Moffat who, in 1881, changed the name of the town to Mont Eagle in honor of his English friend, Lord Mounteagle. Originally a chapel on the campus of Fairmount College , the parish Church of The Holy Comforter was established to accommodate the non-student Episcopal citizens in the area.
