St. Andrew’s-Sewanee was founded in 1868 as an extension of the
University
of
The South
, Sewanee, aimed at educating boys in the tradition of the Episcopal Church. The school’s first students ranged in age from
to 19 years, and during the school’s first year it was known as the Junior Department of the
University
of
The South
.
In 1869 there were enough boys enrolled to organize the
Sewanee
Grammar School
, thus the Junior Department of the
University
of
The South
ceased to exist.
Sewanee
Grammar School
operated until 1908 when its name was changed to
Sewanee
Military
Academy
.
In 1905 another school, St. Andrew’s School, was founded by members of the Order of The Holy Cross. In addition to theses two schools, a girls school, St. Mary’s, was founded near Sewanee in 1896. St. Mary’s ceased operation in 1967 at which time
Sewanee
Military
Academy
opened its doors to female students.
In 1971
Sewanee
Military
Academy
--then a fully coeducational school--abandoned its name and became
Sewanee
Academy
. Eventually, in 1981,
Sewanee
Academy
and St. Andrew’s School merged to form the present St. Andrew’s-Sewanee School.
