was founded as a school for girls in 1876 by the Dominican Sisters of the St. Cecilia Community,
Nashville, at the request of Father Patrick Ryan, rector of Sts. Peter and Paul. Though the school closed during the yellow fever epidemic of 1878, and enrollment lagged immediately following the health crisis,

enjoyed a time of prosperity in the mid-1880’s when a new, larger building was constructed. In 1898

Academy
became a co-educational school, and the name was changed to Notre Dame School. The twentieth century brought more prosperity to Notre Dame and in 1926 Monsignor Francis T. Sullivan saw fit to construct an even larger school house on Eighth Street, two blocks east of Sts. Peter and Paul Church. This structure served the school until 1965 when it moved to the Vermont Avenue location it still occupies. It is important to note that in 1963,
Notre Dame
High School
became the first school in the
Chattanooga
area to racially integrate.
