Mountain Opry
Signal Mountain, TN

One of the longest-running and most well known opries is the Mountain Opry, in the town of Walden on Signal Mountain, TN. This event takes place every Friday evening, holidays included, from 8pm-11pm. Sometimes the show begins early at 7:30pm, if many bands show up to play. You will hear bluegrass, vintage country, and old time music, as well as an occasional choral group, dulcimer duo, or Civil War era brass band. You never know what you will get, but the music will usually be interesting.

The string band groups that appear regularly at the Mountain Opry are the ones that are regularly booked at the local bluegrass and old time festivals: Valley Grass Express, Barren County, The Misfits, Curtis Hicks and the Old Tyme Strings, among many, many others. One 'vintage' house band can be counted on to start the show each week. Then you might hear the Dowden Sisters, a girl trio from North Carolina; Johnny Bellar, dobro session artist accompanying extraordinary old-time country singer, Roy Harper, from over in Manchester, TN, who performs country songs from the 20' s and 30's; the Carters, a family band with three exceptionally talented siblings; local young powerhouse musicians Meredith Goins, John Boulware, Josh Hicks, or James Key; or Georgia Class, a favorite family band with tasteful arrangements and original compositions -- just to name a few.

This Chattanooga institution is nearing its 27th year with a corps of dedicated volunteers and a committed board of directors.

Stage is not accessible to persons using wheelchairs.
Suitable for large groups.
Bus parking available.
Admission is free and all bands are unpaid.
The paper sack is passed for a truly voluntary donation.

Directions: The Mountain Opry is located on Fairmont Pike off Taft Highway (Highway 27) on Signal Mountain. From Chattanooga, take Highway 27 (Corridor J) across the Olgiati Bridge to the North, then exit on Highway 127, toward Signal Mountain. Highway 127 curves up the front of Signal Mountain, then straightens out on top of Walden Ridge. Go straight North on top of the plateau on Taft Highway, about 7 miles to the town of Walden, then make a 'Y' right on Fairmont Pike. The Opry is three blocks on the left.
